Laura Iredale

Composer, Sound Designer, Mix Engineer

Laura Iredale joined our Music Production Diploma with an extensive background in music having undertaken a Music BA at Nottingham University, with a focus on composition, then working in education as Head of Music at a high school. Laura is also establishing herself as a freelancer, both as a sound editor at Molinare Post Production and a mix engineer for a podcast series called Our Voices. The podcast series tells personal stories covering topics such as the NHS, lockdown and mental health – and (one-off project) composer for recent Crossline Theatre production of Friday Night Love Story.
Her work in the field of post-production is primarily as a sound effects editor and sound designer. This includes selecting and editing sounds for spots, atmos, anything to make the place in a given scene sound like it would in real life. For the Our Voices podcast, Laura is typically provided with a Voice Over and interview. She then cleans the dialogue, integrates the podcast intro and outros, chooses the music that will add to the storytelling and pacing of the episode, then bring all the elements together in the mix, followed by mastering and then delivering the final edit.
Some of Laura’s highlights so far include working on a JK Rowling audiobook ‘The Christmas Pig’ (sound design and effects), and sound design/sound effects editing on The Outlaws, a Stephen Merchant series on the BBC.
Laura’s long term career goals are to pursue a career in film sound, in particular film scoring, ideally moving into the role of composer assistant. Find out more about Laura in her interview on our blog where she discusses collaboration and scoring for film.

Boris Massot

Sound Engineer, Producer & Drummer

Since graduating, Boris Massot currently works as a self-employed Sound Engineer. This mostly entails recording or mixing projects for local clients and artists with a hybrid mix of in-person and remote sessions. At the moment, Boris works either out of his home studio, or at a studio located in Geneva, which he’s sharing with other fellow musicians. However it is a goal of Boris’s to own his own studio in the near future.

As well as sound engineering, Boris harbours a plethora of other skills. He produces instrumentals and beats for a company named ‘Lalason’ that sells free of rights music to content creators, he has dabbled in the world of sound designing, which he has since developed a love for and is passionate about finding more work in this field, and drumming wise, Boris is still playing gigs here and there for some local bands.

Boris’s job all depends on the clients or artists that he’s working with. One day he could just be recording a vocal take, the next he’s recording a drum groove for someone, and then another day he’ll be producing a beat/instrumental for a rapper. It does keep things interesting, however right now, he mostly produces royalty free music, records vocals and mixes singles, EPs and albums.

One highlight from the past year the stands out in particular for Boris, was working for world renowned Swiss watch brand, Certina. He was given the chance to compose the sound design, music and fxs for three of their advertisements. Boris also has plans to do the sound design for a documentary set in Tanzania.

Most of Boris’s ambitions for the forthcoming year revolve around his own music as an artist, which he is adamant on making a priority. Boris says that he’s been a victim of postponing but that now is finally the time. His first album ‘Mood Chronicles’ graced our ears early 2024 and features other incredible musicians such as Charlie Stacey (played with Yussef Dayes), Tom Driessler (played for Oscar Jerome & Tom Misch), and many more musician friends that he either made from his time in London or back home in Geneva. For this album, Boris did almost everything by himself just to prove to himself that he could do it, and he did. This includes, the composition, production and mixing and mastering. Boris says that he’d like to give a ‘special thanks to Abbey Road Institute and to the great teachers, who he misses, and who taught him so much about audio manipulation.’

Boris says that he is constantly learning and perfecting his craft but with one album already out, it’s now time for him to prepare for his second one. Having applied for financial help amongst Swiss institutions and several grants to help create it, Boris is hoping for a bigger budget and more collaborations for this one, which we’re so excited to see come to life.
